Question no. 23

23.  Two stars of masses m and 5m are 3000 parsec apart. If the force on the large one is F, the force on the small star is

(a) F/25                                                             (b) F/5
(c) F                                                                  (d) 5F

Dear student,

Gravitational force is directly proportional to the product of the two masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them. Since the mass and distance are unchanged, the force exerted will be the same.

So, option (c) is correct. The force will be F only but the direction will be opposite.
