The following extract is humorous because it gives us the insight into the relationship between a teacher and his student. We see that there are three different kinds of people - Crocker Harris, Frank and Taplow. Whilst Crocker Harris embodies the older generation and appears to be everything that the younger generation (Taplow) hates, Frank is different. He serves as a middle man, leaning towards neither generation, and adding interjections about Taplow's behaviour and Crocker Harris's behaviour. His nonchalant character and indifference to everything around him (for example, saying that he hates the science that he has to teach) makes the play humorous.
