The birth of blue skin coloured baby occurs due to a syndrome
called Blue baby syndrome It is a fatal condition that occur in
infants due to large concentration of nitrate in drinking water Due
to this condition, the haemoglobin containing iron in the form of
Fe2+ red blood cells is oxidized to
methaemoglobin (Fe3+)
and produces methemoglobin This methemoglobin is unable to
transport oxygen Te affected infants develop an unusual blue-grey
or lavender skin colour Methaemoglobin levels > 50% can quickly
lead to coma and death if the condition is not recognised and
treated Infants are particularly susceptible to the condition
during their first 6 months of life because they have low amounts
of methaemoglobin reductase, a red blood cell enzyme that converts
methaemoglobin back to haemoglobin
