Relate the functions of small intestine to its unique structure.

The region of the small intestine includes the duodenum, jejunum and ileum. Small intestine secretes various digestive enzymes such as maltase, sucrase etc. and mainly performed functions related to digestion and absorption of food. These segmentations mix chyme with digestive juices and bring food into contact with the mucosa for absorption; peristalsis move chyme through the small intestine. The digestion of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins is completed here in small intestine, also 90 per cent absorption (with the help of villi) of water and nutrients that pass through the digestive system takes place in small intestine only.
