seprate sulphur from a solution of sulphur in carbon disulphide
Sulphur is soluble in carbon disulphide solvent (CS2) while Carbon is insoluble in CS2.
Experiment:
Precaution: CS2 is an inflammable and explosive compound. Evaporation should be done in a well ventilated fume cabinet (with vapour recovery) over a waterbath. Do not expose it to fire or even an oven.
- Add the mixture of carbon and sulphur to CS2. The sulphur will get dissolved in the solvent.
- Filter to remove the carbon. Dry the filter paper and recover the carbon.
- Collect the filtrate containing the sulphur. Evaporate the CS2 away and recover the dry sulphur.
Precaution: CS2 is an inflammable and explosive compound. Evaporation should be done in a well ventilated fume cabinet (with vapour recovery) over a waterbath. Do not expose it to fire or even an oven.
