Short note on inbreeding in animals

Dear Student

When two individuals of related ancestry are mated for the production of an offspring, it is known as inbreeding.

Advantage of inbreeding is that it results in the formation of purelines. Its disadvantage is inbreeding depression (decline in survival and reproduction). Inbreeding depression can increase extinction risks in small populations.

Disadvantages: Inbreeding depression is the reduction in the fertility and productivity of an organism due to continuous inbreeding. Inbreeding refers to the mating of closely- related individuals within the same breed. Continued inbreeding especially close inbreeding usually reduces the fertility and even productivity of an organism.
