A viable seed is defined as a seed that can germinate into a mature plant under favourable conditions of moisture, temperature etc. Viability testing can be done by placing some seeds in a bowl of water. Seeds that float are likely to be sterile while the ones that sink are viable.
Various factors that affect the seed viability are:
- Temperature: Seeds exposed to very high or low temperature would not germinate and hence they would become non-viable. Every seed has a specific temperature at which it germinates.
- Moisture: If seeds are exposed to high moisture content, they will rot.
- Storage conditions: Seeds should be stored at a proper place. These are killed in home freezers. Seed banks are suitable for keeping seeds.
