Solve 7th question

Q7. The mean of n observations x 1 , x2,...... , x n is  x  . If each observation is decreased by P, then show that the mean of the new observations is   x     -   p .

Dear Student,

We have: Mean = Sum of all observationsNumber of observations x = x1 + x2 + ... + xnn x1 + x2 + ... + xn = nx        ...iNow, each observation is decreased by p.Thus, New sum of all observations = x1 - p + x2 - p + ... + xn - p = x1 + x2 + ... + xn - p + p + ... n times = nx - np    [From i]Hence, New Mean = New sum of all observationsNumber of observations = nx - npn = nx - pn = x - p
