The counter current mechanism is present in the two limbs of Henle's loop (ascending limb and descending limb). The ascending limb is impermeable to water and responsible for the transport of sodium ions and urea to the surrounding tissues which cause the glomerular filtrate hypotonic.  The walls of the descending limb (base) is permeable to water and ions, therefore, it allows the entry/ absorption of water and thus makes the glomerular filtrate hypertonic.
