One man made disaster: Bhopal gas disaster, which happened due to the leakage of methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas from the Union Carbide factory in Bhopal on the night of December 2-3, 1984. Over 500,000 people were exposed to the gas. Estimates of death toll due to the disaster vary from 3000 to 8000 with thousands more suffering permanent disabling injuries. The disaster was caused by the leakage of water into the MIC tank, which itself was the result of poor maintenance.
