As per the definitions given in the dictionaries -
  • a 'minar' is any tower, and the word is popularly used in South Asia and India to be precise. For example, the 'Qutub Minar' is a monument with a mosque on the premises but with no special purpose for the tower.
  • while a minaret is basically a tower that is attached to the mosque and is used for the Muslim call for prayer and usually has open galleries.
