• Take two small pots of approximately the same size and same amount of soil. One should have a plant in it. Place a stick of the same length as the plant in other pot.
  • Cover the soil in both pots with a plastic sheet so that moisture cannot escape by evaporation.
  • Cover both sets, one with the plant and the other with the stick, with plastic sheets and place in bright sunlight for half an hour.
  • Do you observe any difference in the two cases?

Dear student,
The objective of the experiment is to study about the process of the transpiration performed by the leaves of the plant.

For this, two pots are taken filled with soil in which one pot has plant potted in it and in other there is only a stick of same height as that of plant. The both the pots are covered tightly with the plastic sheet so that no moisture can escape from it and is kept in the sunlight for half an hour.

Observation:
It was observed that the plastic sheet covered on the potted plant has a large amount of water droplets and moisture in it and the plastic sheet covered on the stick potted pot did not show any water droplets inside it.

This shows that the plants show a process of the evaporation of the water in the form of water vapour from the stomata present in the leaves called as the transpiration.
