For preventing escape of a seasoned criminal like Evans, the authorities should have paid attention to minor details. The laxity of prison authorities allowed Evans to impersonate Mcleery. When Evans reentered the cell as Mcleery, the authorities failed to conduct a thorough check. Despite searching his cell repeatedly, Evans managed to hide items like beard, spectacles, etc. in his cell. When the governor nabbed Evans in the hotel, instead of handing him over to his own officers, he handed Evans over to unknown officers. These officers were actually Evans own men who disguised themselves as officers to fool the governor.
