'The Canterville Ghost ' is a ghost story. Do you feel the sympathy of the writer lies with the ghost? Discuss.

'The Canterville Ghost' is indeed a ghost story that centers around the ghost of Sir Simon that haunts the Canterville house. The writer's sympathy does lie with the ghost: he is shown as being persecuted by the new owners of the house! Instead of being able to scare the Otises, the ghost himself is frightened out of his wits. The ghost is seen as a pitiable old soul who has not found solace for hundreds of years: this is depicted in the ghost's exchange with Virginia. The reader silently rejoices as Sir Simon finds peace when Virginia repents and prays for him. Eventually, the reader too sympathises with the ghost.
