The nucleus plays an important role in the classification of cells. This holds true in case of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Based on the presence or absence of a well-defined nucleus, cells are classified as eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells.

Prokaryotic cells: Nucleus with nuclear membrane is absent
Eukaryotic cells: A well-defined nucleus with nuclear membrane is present
