2. The ghost feels that no ghost has been humiliated as he has been. How does he try to save his reputation and what light does this reputation saving programme throw on his character?

3. Explain the significance of the expression, 'egotism of a true artist, he went over his most celebrated performances' with reference to the ghost.

1) The continual renewal of the blood stain on the library floor excited the attention of the Otis family. It was a strange occurrence considering the fact that the door was always locked at night by Mr Otis and the windows were kept closely barred. The chameleon-like changing of colours attracted a good deal of comment. Some mornings it was a dull red, then it would be vermilion, a rich purple and once when they came down for family prayers, they found it to be bright emerald-green. These kaleidoscopic changes amused the party very much and bets were freely made on the subject every evening. The impression formed regarding the American attitude in the story is that these people were fearless, modern and products of rational thinking. The Otis family are depicted as fearless even in the face of preternatural phenomena while the former English occupants of Canterville Chase were helpless victims in the hands of the ghost. This shows that an emergent modern nation like America and its citizens were of a pioneering sort with not a grain of fear because they had travelled to unknown lands and set up homes in wild places.

2) The ghost tried to salvage his reputation by putting on a scary appearance for the second time and this shows that he had the true egotism of the artist as he took care to put on a good spooky performance. He put on his make-up almost as if he was going to perform at the theatre. It took him three hours to get ready and when at last everything was ready, he seemed to be pleased with his reputation. He cared a lot about his reputation and that is why he wanted finesse in his appearance to ensure that there was no way in which he would not be successful in drawing the requisite reaction.

3) The ghost had the enthusiastic egotism of the true artist and went over his most celebrated performances with the elan of a performer. He was not interested in being a scary ghost rather he wanted to play the part of a scary ghost and revel in his performances. He wanted to preserve his impeccable record of success in scaring people and dress for the occasion accordingly. The ghost wasn't evil, he was simply interested in enjoying his performances with the egotistical enjoyment of a born artist.
