THREE ADVANTAGES OF ALLOYING TWO OR MORE METALS AND GIVE ONE EXAMPLE FOR EACH.

When a metal is mixed with another element, which may be a metal or a non metal such that a new substance of homogeneous composition is obtained, it is known as alloying and the substance is known as an alloy. An alloy is thus a homogeneous mixture of two or more metals, or a metal and a non metal. Example stainless steel, duralumin etc. An alloy is a combination of metals. The advantage of alloying is that it enhance certain properties like strength, ductility, resistance to corrosion, durability etc to fit better the uses they have been designed for. The advantage of alloys over pure metals is the ability to combine the best properties of multiple metals. For e.g. steel is more harder than pure iron,. more resistant to corrosion.

Examples:

 Brass - Copper and zinc

Bronze - Copper and Tin

Solder - Tin and lead

Stainless Steel - Iron, Chromium, Nickel and carbon
