Solution:

It was pleasant weather. The clouds were like long French loaves glowed pink as the sun emerged to splash the distance mountain tops with a rose tinted blush. Suddenly, the clouds turned grey and gloomy. It was all dark! The early evening looked like midnight. It started raining heavily with thunder rumbling now and then with sparks of lightning.

Joe was standing on his balcony when all of a sudden, there was a power cut. It was immensely dark with not a ray of light. He heard someone’s footsteps and got scared. All alone in the house, he didn’t know what to do. His parents had gone to meet an ailing relative and would come home late. And that night it seemed they would not be returning soon. The footsteps became louder and someone was coming closer. Joe wondered who it was. Was that a burglar? Was it a killer? Was he hallucinating?

He moved towards his room and hid under his bed. The next minute he saw a man wearing a long black overcoat, a hat and long boots. He seemed to be scary, lit a torch and started looking for Joe in the room. Finally, he bent on his knees, looked under the bed and pulled Joe’s hand. It was none other than the latter's dear uncle who had come to surprise him and celebrate his birthday at midnight.

Joe took a deep breath and had a sigh of relief. He had never celebrated his birthday like that.
