using the electronic configuration ,explain how magnesium atom combines with oxygen atom to form magnesium oxide by transfer of electrons

Magnesium has atomic no. 12 means 12 electrons, which can be arranged in 3 shell 2, 8, 2.Its outermost shell contains 2 electron. So it can loose 2 electrons to get the octate configuration. Atomic no. of Oxygen is 8, means it carries 8 electrons arranged as 2, 6. so Outermost shell of Oxygen contain 6 electrons. It can take 2 electron from other element to complete its octate. So Mg loose 2 e- and Oxygen gains 2 e- to form MgO. It is explained by diagram given below:
