Walk from one corner of a basket-ball court to its opposite corner along its sides..Measure the distance covered by you and magnitude of the displacement...What difference would you notice between the two in this case???

Answer:

If you walk one corner to another cornor (opposite cornor of basketball court).

Let suppose Length of the court = x meter;
and, Breadth of the court = y meter;

Then,

Total distance covered by anyone to reach one corner to opposite cornor of the basketball court = x + y meter
and total magnitude of displacement is also = x + y meter.

Distance =  x + y
Magnitude of displacement:

Displacement = a2 +b2

Otherwise: Magnitude of displacement generally the movement of the person it could be zero (If that person again came back to the original position of the basketball court it would be zero but the distance covered by that person is 2 x (x + y)..)
