What actually happens when universal indicator is added to acid or base..what makes them change color?

Dear student,
When acid is added to universal indicator its colour changes to red and when base is added the colour changes to blue . Te reason behind the colour change may be the presence of H⁺ and OH^- in acid and base respectively.
