What are Good and bad effect of import substitution?

DEAR STUDENT,
Import substitution policies are used to protect domestic industries from import competition. This policy has both good as well as bad  effects
GOOD EFFECTS:-

1. The good effect is that import substitution policies allow a nation to be completely self-sufficient. 
2.  This policy would allow the developing nation to avoid import tariffs and provide jobs for local workers. 

BAD EFFECTS :-

1.  A nation that becomes self-sufficient breeds corruption and activities such as smuggling ,etc.
2.  The nation that does not import will have higher costs for a product due to lack of competition and might also have a product that is inferior due to technology that is outdated.
