what are Sphincters? What is their importance in the process of Digestion?

Dear student,

Sphincters are circular/ring-shaped muscles that can relax and tighten to allow food to prevent and pass through the alimentary canal while being digested.

They're controlled by the nervous system and are responsible for preventing the backflow of digesting food and regulating the passage to maintain regular food transit through the canal.

Sphincters are special, circular muscles that open and close certain body parts. Most often, the action of a sphincter is to regulate the passage of some type of fluid, such as bile, urine, or fecal matter.
