What are the different indicators ?

Dear Student,

With reference to the chapter mentioned in your query , refer the following:

1. Indicators refers to those things /aspects that seeks to explain something or is used to draw comparisons.
2.  In the context of the chapter, Development is a very broad and comprehensive concept.
3.  â€‹Development in the conventional sense would mean rise in per capita income and growth in the economy which is certainly one of the indicators. However, it takes into account the quantitative aspect of development and does not give a broader perspective about the notion of development. It takes into account national income, per capita income, GDP.
4. The above notion of development doesn't take into account the qualitative aspect and that development also implies leading a good quality life where individuals develop themselves to the fullest. It includes providing good education, health facilities. This gives us a broader picture of development as specified by Human Development index.

5.This would include the literacy rate , as another indicator, which is the  proportion of the population over age fifteen that can read and write. It gives us a more holistic approach and understanding of the concept of development as it includes those areas which are required to lead a quality life.

6. It would also take into account life expectancy, another indicator of development which basically gives us information about an average age of a person , how long a person is likely to live depending on his year of birth. In fact, it is one of the important indicators for calculating human development index.
7. Infant mortality rate: which gives  the number of children that die before the age of one year as a proportion of 1000 live children born in that particular year. That explains the health standards  of a particular state or a country.
8. All the above aspects of human development could be regarded important to provide a complete picture of development and to lead a quality, dignified life.

Regards
