What are the habitat adaptation in plants

Dear student.

Adaptive features of aquatic plants:

  • The tissues of stems of aquatic plants are air filled (aerenchyma tissue) which helps the plant to stand firmly and steadily in the flow of water.
  • The outer surfaces of the plants are covered by cuticle to prevent excess water absorption.

Adaptations of plants in deserts

  • Desert plants such as cactus,  Opuntia , etc. have leaves in the form of spines. This adaptation helps them in reducing the loss of water by transpiration. In these plants, stems perform the function of photosynthesis. Stems are covered with a waxy layer, which reduces the loss of water.

Adaptations of plants in mountain areas

Trees such as  pinus, spruce, etc. are conical in shape with needle-like leaves. This adaptation allows snow and rainwater to slide off easily.

Some of the adaptations in plants in the Tropical rainforest are:
  1. The trees have developed thin and smooth bark that makes difficult for other plants to grow on them.
  2. Some plants like Lianas have adapted by having their roots in the ground and climbing high to reach sunlight.
Regards.
