What are trichomes?? explain it's function??

Trichomes are fine extensions or appendages of epidermal origin, found on plant surface. They can have various shapes and sizes (straight/ spiral/ hooked). They can be both unicellular or multicellular in terms of complexity. They are sometimes found on the upper surface (Adaxial) and sometimes on the lower surface (Abaxial).
They perform various functions like:
1. Physicochemical protection of plant surface
2. Protects from microbial infestation
3. Shields the plant surface from aphids and insects
4. Helps in avoiding excessive loss of water due to transpiration
