While going away from Edla’s house the peddler left his rattrap and also the thirty kronor which he had stolen from the crofter’s house for her as a Christmas gift. He also wrote a letter to her saying that he did not wanted her to be embarrassed by a thief like him on the Christmas Eve, and that he wanted to be nice to her as a real captain would have been. He signed the letter impersonating the actual captain Von Stalhe.
