Judewin was zitkala-Sa's only friend there. She informed Zitkala-Sa that their hair were to be cut short. Zitkala-Sa had come from a community where only cowards were beleived to have short shingled hair. Hence, she revolted against this and hid herself. However, she was ultimately forced to get her hair cut.

Bama learnt about the extent of discrimination her caste faced when she was quite young. Earlier she laughed on how the elder of her caste was not even allowed to touch the fully wrapped food meant for their employer (who belonged to a higher caste). When she reported this scene to her brother, he explained Bama that the incident was not funny but rather sad.

On the very first day in the land of apples zitkala sa had the terrible news from her friend judewin that their long,heavy hair would be shingled.in their community short hair was worn by the mourners and shingled hair by the cowards.so she was not ready to submit to such indiginity without struggle like her friend judewin.
