what did the umayyads do to consolidate thier leadership with in the umma  ?

The Ummayads took the following steps to consolidate their leadership with the ummah.

1. They moved their capital from Medina to Damascus. Medina had been the traditional power centre of their predecessors.
2. Their power base was no longer Arabia. Instead, it was Syria and other parts of the Byzantine empire that the Arabs had conquered. Hence, they were able to reduce their dependence on the Arabs.
3. The Ummayads took firm steps to suppress rebellions in the name of Islam.
