What do you mean by hardness of a substance

Dear student
Hardness is the property of a substance which is responsible for making a compact arrangement so that it is difficult to deform , etc.
The material whose density is more will give compact arrangement and they are called hard material. Material whose density is less have loosely packed arrangement of molecules and are soft.
Ex for hard material - stone
soft material - cotton
Metals are generally solids. We now that the molecules or atoms present in the solid are tightly packed and the molecules are very close to each other.hence this makes the metals very hard and hence they usually have a high density.
Exceptions are : sodium, potassium and mercury
