what do you understand about the tone of the father and how is it brought effectively

The tone of the father in the poem brings out the poignancy of the subject matter. One the hand, the father is aware of the fact that his son has changed as an adult and no longer looks up to him as the authority figure. On the other hand, he still wants to be a part of his son's life. Hence, his tone is placatory as well gently persuasive, the objective being to forget their differences and come together once again as father and son.
