What if natural vibration occurs in a vacuum. What will be the outcomes?

Dear Student,

Theoretically an object performing natural vibration should continue vibration indefinitely. But in reality it should not vibrate indefinitely. Quite a bit of energy will be dissipated in the string itself.Energy will be converted into heat inside the string itself. Also the string is not perfectly elastic and the mounting points on both ends are not perfectly rigid. So the speed of vibration decreases and finally it comes to a stop. Also the joints between the string and support can create friction. So natural vibrations in vacuum can exist for a log period of time as compared to those in a medium. But natural vibrations in vacuum are not indefinite.
