Parabola is a conic section obtained by intersecting a right circular conical surface and a plane parallel to a generating straight line of that surface.

It can also be defined as the set of all points in a plane that are equidistant from a fixed line and a fixed point (not on the line in the plane). The fixed line is called the directrix. The fixed point is called the focus.
