what is a red shift

Redshift is a natural phenomena which occurs when an object is moving away from a point of observation. When this happens the (visible) spectrum of that object shifts towards the red end (longer wavelength).

This typically occurs in outer space in galaxies moving away from us at great speeds. They appear more redder.
