what is a term in algebraic expressions

Terms are the elements in an algebraic expression that are separated by the plus or minus signs.

Consider the algebraic expression as, x2 + y2 - 2xy

There are three terms in the above expression namely

First term = x2 ; second term = y2 and third term = - 2xy

Algebraic expressions means that, If RHS = LHS, with the help of an variable. Example-                                                                                                                                                                                                              2+y+4=8

                                                                                                                                                               4y+6=14

An expression consisting of arithmetic numbers, letters (used as symbols) and operation signs is called as Algebraic Expressions. E.g.: 2x + 3y, 8a – 6b, x2 + 5y, 5x2 – 8y2, etc.

The parts of an algebric expression which are formed seperately and then added are called the terms of the expression.

In an algebric expression, minus sign (-) is included in the term.

For Example: In the expression a2 + 2ab - 3b2, the last term is -3b2 and not 3b2
