what is addition reaction? give an example.

A type of chemical reaction in which two substances combine to form a third substance, with no other substance being produced. Addition reactions occur mainly in organic chemistry, particularly in situations where a simple molecule is added across a carbon-carbon double bond in an unsaturated compound. For example, the addition reaction between chlorine (Cl2) and ethene (CH2=CH2 ) produces 1,2-dichloroethane (ClCH2(CH2)Cl).

Some plastics (such as polystyrene) are made by addition polymerization, usually initiated by the action of a free radical.

Chemical reaction in which the atoms of an element or compound react with a double bond or triple bond in an organic compound by opening up one of the bonds and becoming attached to it, for example:

CH2CH2 + HCl ® CH3CH2Cl

Another example is the addition of hydrogen atoms to unsaturated compounds in vegetable oils to produce margarine. Addition reactions are used to make polymers from alkenes

the process by which the unsaturated gain hydrogen's and become saturated hydrocarbons is know as addition reaction.
you can easily remember it.the word addition states the adding oh hydrogen atoms to unsaturated hydrocarbons which have double or triple bond, gets hydrogen and turns to saturated ones.

use of this process:
vegetable oils which have long unsaturated hydrocarbons are much healthier than the animal fats which are saturated ones.

in many industries, they use this process known as hydrogenation.this is where the unsaturated carbons are changed to saturated ones with the help of catalysts( it is a substance that wont affect the chemical reaction but make a path for the reaction to take place ) that help the saturated carbons gain hydrogen and transfer it to saturated ones.
the reaction,
