What is deforestation?why was it considered harmful by the colonisers?

Deforestation is the process of destroying a forest and replacing it with something else, especially by an agriculture system .It was considered harmful because the shifting cultivation by the tribal people for agriculture led to deforestation. The Britishers  felt that land which was used for cultivation every few years could not grow trees for railway timber and  it also added danger of the flames spreading and burning valuable timber.
