What is difference b/w Forward biased and Reverse biased ?

Explain in detail with respect to :

i) p-n-p junction
ii) n-p-n junction
iii) Zener diode

When positive terminal of battery is connected to p type region and negative terminal of battery is connected to n type region then such connection is called as forward biased. In forward biased the width of depletion layer reduces.

Similarly, if p-type region is connected to the negative terminal of the battery and the n-type region to the positive terminal of the battery then such connection is called as reverse biased. In reverse biased the width of depletion layer increases.
For general semiconductor diode, in case of reverse biased very little current will flow until the diode breaks.

In case of zener diode, permits current to flow even when it is reversed biased when its "Zener voltage" is reached.
