  • Magnetite is termed as Ferrous-ferric oxide. Magnetite is a mineral, and its chemical formula is Fe3O4. The chemical IUPAC name is iron(II,III) oxide and the common chemical name is ferrous-ferric oxide. It is black in color and important ore of iron.

  • It is the sulphide ore of iron. It is also known as mineral pyrite, or iron pyrite. It is an iron sulfide with the chemical formula FeS2.

  • Difference between mineral and metal:

Minerals are present in the natural environment. They can be found in earths’surface and underground. They are homogenous solids, and they have regular structures. Minerals are found in rocks, ores and natural mineral deposits.

For example, hematite and magnetite are found in iron ores. Minerals like gems and diamonds are rare.

Metals have certain properties that distinguish them from other elements. Metals reflect light and have a shiny appearance. They are also good conductors of electricity and heat.

For example, Iron which is obtained from hematite and magnetite, is a metal.
