What is heavy water?Mention five functions of heavy water

Dear Student, Heavy water is the deutrated water. In this hydrogen is replaced by heavier isotope i.e. deuterium. The formula of heavy water is D2O. Functions: 1) It is used as moderator in nuclear reactor 2) It is used a tracer in biochemical reactions to understand the movement of water in body. 3) It is used for studying reaction mechanism and kinetics of various reactions by replacing it with water in hydrolytic reactions. 4) It is used as solvent in proton magnetic resonance (PMR) spectroscopy. 5) It is used in Infra red spectroscopy instead of normal water.
