What is hydrogenation ??
Hydrogenation is the process of addition of hydrogen to an unsaturated organic compound (compounds containing double or triple bond) to convert it into a saturated compound (compound containing only single bonds). This process requires catalyst, non-catalyzed hydrogenation occurs only at very high temperatures. For example, the addition of hydrogen to ethene (CH2=CH2) in the presence of nickel catalyst is hydrogenation.
The process of hydrogenation is also used in saturation of vegetable oil.
