What is longitudinal wave? In which medium : solid, liquid or gas, can it be produced?

Longitudinal waves are those waves in which movement of particles is along the direction of wave. Crest and trough of transverse waves are equivalent to compression and rarefaction of longitudinal wave. It can be produced in solid, liquid or gases.
