what is meant by translocation can u give an example?

The process by which a substance is moved from one position to another is called translocation.

For example,

  • During photosynthesis glucose in produced in the green parts of the plants especially in the leaves. But glucose is necessary for the whole plant, both green and non green parts (roots, flowers) for growth and development. By the process of translocation the carbohydrate (glucose) produced in the leaves reach to each and every part of a plant. Phloem helps in translocation.
  • Translocation process is observed in genetics also. Translocation of one part of a chromosome to another part of the same or different chromosome is considered as a type of chromosomal abnormality mostly seen in cancer.

The transportation of food from the leaves to other parts of the plant occurs in the vascular tissue, namely the phloem. This process of transporting food is known as translocation.

For example:

Plants produce carbohydrates (sugars) in their leaves by photosynthesis, but nonphotosynthetic parts of the plant also require carbohydrates and other organic and nonorganic materials. For this reason, nutrients are translocated from sources (regions of excess carbohydrates, primarily mature leaves) to sinks (regions where the carbohydrate is needed).
