what is metabolism, catabolism and anabolism?

Metabolism is the sum of all the biochemical reactions taking place in our body which involve uptake or release of energy.

Metabolism is of two types:

1. Catabolism: Breakdown of biomolecules in the body to release energy.

For example: Respiration - Breakdown of glucose

2. Anabolism: Synthesis of biomolecules by the consumption of energy.

For example: Photosynthesis - Synthesis of food by the plants.

Metabolism is a term that is used to describe all chemical reactions involved in maintaining the living state of the cells and the organism. Metabolism can be conveniently divided into two categories:

  • Catabolism - the breakdown of molecules to obtain energy
  • Anabolism - the synthesis of all compounds needed by the cells
