what is metonymy? How is it different from simile and metaphor?

Metonymy: It is that figure of speech in which one word or phrase is substituted for the other with which is closely associated. It is used for indirectly referring to a particular thing.

For instance,
  • "crown" stands for "royalty"
  • "pen" stands for "a written word"

Simile: is a figure of speech which means an implied comparison made between two objects of different kinds which have however at least one point in common.

For instance,

  • My love is like a melody
  • You are going crazy like an insane person

Metaphor: is a comparison between two dissimilar things, as if the two things were one.

For instance,

  • The camel is the ship of the desert
  • He was a lion in the battlefield
  • She was a nightingale in the concert.
