Ozone is present in our atmosphere in the stratosphere level. It absorbs harmful UV radiation which can otherwise cause cancer and other skin ailments. The use of chlorofluorocarbons in aerosols and refrigerators has resulted into thinning of ozone layer. These substances react with the ozone gas and destroy it.

Ozone holes have been found over Antarctic and arctic region. It is feared that excessive amount of UV radiation will reach the earth and will cause skin cancer in humans

The ozone "hole" is really a reduction in concentrations of ozone high above the earth in the stratosphere. The ozone hole is defined geographically as the area wherein the total ozone amount is less than 220 Dobson Units. The ozone hole has steadily grown in size (up to 27 million sq. km.) and length of existence (from August through early December) over the past two decades.

The ozone gas is becoming thinner and thinner due to the excessive burning of fossil fuels and excess in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The result is, the ultraviolet rays of the sun have started entering the earth. Now, it is believed that the ozone layer has a certain number of holes which allows UV rays to pass through. These holes are called ozone holes.
