What is phloem explain in detail

Dear Student,

Phloem is one of the types of vascular tissues present in plants which transport various inorganic nutrients and sugars such as sucrose to different parts of the plant body.

The main function of phloem is to transport nutrients and sap (a water based solution rich in sugar content) from one part of the plant to another which is essential for the growth and maintenance of the plant.

Phloem comprises of the following:

  • Sieve tubes are tubular cells with perforated walls.
  • Companion cells are elongated cells, which are always associated with sieve tubes. They perform metabolic functions and helps in water translocation.
  • Phloem parenchyma is a cell associated with the phloem tissue. They pack other types of cells together.
  • Phloem fibres are non-living cells.
