A setup that contains a small mass suspended from a fixed point and allowed to swing freely under the influence of gravity is called a simple pendulum.

A simple pendulum consists of a small metal ball ( called bob) suspended by a long thread from a rigid support, such that tje bob is free to swing back and forth.

One  complete to-and-fro motion of the bob about its mean position is called an oscillation of the pendulum.
