The author considers steam launches to be a nuisance, and hence he despises them. He thinks that people who ride aboard a steam launch are pretentious, hence he and his friends always try to trouble them. One of the instances that the narrator recounts, is of how he and his friends, did not pay attention to the steam launch which was whistling at them to get out of the way, as a result of which, they created a commotion on the river, and felt greatly satisfied in doing so.
