what is the chemical name of dry ice? why is it called dry ice?

Dry ice is nothing but solidified carbon dioxide. So its chemical name is carbon dioxide. It is called dry ice because it has appearance similar to that of ice, and is in fact colder than ordinary ice.

It is mainly used as a cooling agent because it has temperature lower than that of water ice. It is used for preserving frozen foods, ice cream etc.
